Changing filters/Elements ?

If you change your filter elements based on schedule, you’re changing them either too early or too late. If you change them early, before all their dirt-holding capacity is used up, you’re wasting money on unnecessary filter changes. If you change them late, after the filter has gone on bypass, the increase in particles in…

What micron rating do I need for my application?

The ISO cleanliness code publishes a recommended cleanliness guideline for typical hydraulic system components; however, always check component manufacturer recommended ratings.

What is the main purpose of Hydraulic Fluids?

The primary function of a hydraulic fluid is to convey power. In use, however, there are other important functions of hydraulic fluid such as protection of the hydraulic machine components. Lubrication: Hydraulic fluids must provide the lubricating characteristics and qualities necessary to protect all hydraulic system components against friction and wear, rust, oxidation and corrosion.

How long is the service life of my filter element ?

This depends on many variables. Only by knowing the dirt content (cleanliness level) and dirt ingression rate of your hydraulic system you can calculate the service life of a filter element. You can achieve this by taking an oil sample. We mostly recommend changing your elements at least every 6 months depending on what you…

What system characteristics should be considered when specifying a hydraulic filter?

Some of the characteristics to consider are: Filter location, Hydraulic system/hose size, LPM per minute/Flow requirements, Fluid reservoir size and approximate fluid working temperature.

Can a by-pass filter have a by-pass valve?

No, by-pass filters do not require a by-pass valve. A by-pass valve is required in full-flow filtration to make sure that the engine gets lubrication when oil is cold or the filter is plugged. If oil is cold, by-pass filter will receive less oil flow and in case it is plugged, will not function anymore.

What is a by-pass filter?

A by-pass filter, not to be confused with a by-pass valve, is a high efficiency low flow filter which filters a small percent of the engine oil at one time. By-pass filters are very effective at removing the smaller wear-causing contaminates due to their high efficiency of filtering smaller contaminates. By-pass filters are always used…

In mobile hydraulics, where is the filter located?

On a mobile hydraulic system, the filter or filters can be located in several different areas based on the system’s design and intended use. The most common locations are: Suction side – a strainer on the end of the pick-up line in the reservoir or a filter in the line between the reservoir and the…

What is the difference between ISO and SAE ratings?

There is no significant difference between ISO (International Standards Organization) or SAE (Society of Automotive Engineering). Both organizations provide test standards to allow the ability to reliably compare published filter ratings among manufacturers.
