How does a variable displacement hydraulic pump work?

The displacement, or amount of fluid pumped per revolution of the pump’s input shaft can be varied while the pump is running. Many variable displacement pumps are “reversible”, meaning that they can act as a hydraulic motor and convert fluid energy into mechanical energy.

What is the function of the pump?

A pump produces liquid movement or flow: it does not generate pressure. It produces the flow necessary for the development of pressure which is a function of resistance to fluid flow in the system.

What is the hydraulic pump?

A hydraulic pump is a mechanical device that converts mechanical power into hydraulic energy. It generates flow with enough power to overcome pressure induced by the load.
